5 Tips on How to Stop Procrastination in Life

“You may delay, but time will not.” –Benjamin Franklin, American inventor & genius

Okay… so we’ve all had this experience before. You’re in school and you’re about to take an exam in the next 5 minutes that’s worth like half of your grade.

This would be fine if you had been a good little boy or girl and studied in advance for the darn thing (like you should have)… but no, you decided to watch your favorite movie the night before… and procrastinate this important occasion in your life.

Your palms are sweaty…

Your heart is racing…

Your mouth is dry…

You are so nervous that you are about to release your bodily functions… (okay, so that’s never happened to me before)

We ALL know that procrastination is not a good habit to have… but the problem is that in one form or another, we all do it!

Procrastination can lead to high levels of stress, anxiety, worry… and in some major cases it can lead you to losing a job, failing a school course or even losing a marriage or your life if it is in the wrong arena.

Don’t delay the important things of life anymore my friend! Here are 5 SIMPLE tips I would like to share with you on how you can overcome and STOP procrastinating in life:

  1. Stop thinking and start doing
Many people such as myself tend to over-analyze things or want to have a “perfect plan” before they even take action and start doing. The problem is that, if we think about a task too long or too in-depth… many times, we make that task look larger than what it really is… and get nervous about even starting it.

Solution: Come up with an initial plan of accomplishing your task… and then take some action on getting it done, now!

  2. Take one step at a time
Rome wasn’t built in a day. And neither are most of your most important projects. If you have a project that may take you several weeks or months to complete… it is ALWAYS best to write down all the steps that need to be taken in order to complete it on paper.

Once you have it down on paper… proceed to do ONE task at a time, putting all your focus on that ONE task. This will allow you to accomplish your project quickly and efficiently without you pulling out all of your hair!!

  3. Start with the hardest task
As humans… we typically gravitate towards doing the EASIEST thing first. The issue with this is that most of the time… the hardest task that we have is the one that has the greatest impact or importance for us.

Also, what happens is that if you have a day full of working towards accomplishing several tasks… and you start by working the easiest stuff first… by the time you come to the hardest tasks (ie. the most important & vital tasks)… you are absolutely drained mentally and physically, and can’t handle that hard task.

So what do we typically do at the end of the day… when we see that “hard task”? We put that sucker off for the next day… and then the next… and then the next. It never gets done!

SOLUTION: If something is extraordinarily difficult, boring or dull to do… do yourself a favor and get it done first. That was easy, wasn’t it? 😉

  4. Make a decision NOW
Force yourself to make a decision right now. Even if you aren’t required to make one immediately… make one right now if you are able to.

By putting decisions off (especially the important decisions)… you are stockpiling it all up, where you will find yourself will a “closet” full of hard and/or important decisions to make all at once.

Decide now, what you want to do… and you will be able to sleep better and be more at peace within your life.

  5. Face your fear
When we have to accomplish something and it brings us fear… many of us will be like the proverbial ostrich and stick our heads in the dirt… as if that will hide us or protect us from that which we fear.

The honest God truth is that running away from your fears only makes things worse. Make the conscious decision to face your fears head on. After all, what is the worst that can happen to you? 🙂

Have fun and more peace in life friend… by making decisions now and taking actions now.
