Romans 3:9-20 – No One is Righteous in God’s Eyes

Romans 3:9 – “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. ALL have turned away, they have together become worthless”

Romans 3: 19 – “Whatever the Law says, it says to those under the law, so that every mouth is silenced and the whole world is held accountable to God. Therefore NO ONE will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the Law, rather through Law we become conscious of sin.”

  • The scriptures continue to basically describe how we have ALL sinned and fallen short of God’s glory.
  • It would seem to be a message of doom and gloom that we all suck & will never be close to God.
  • But in vs. 19 it tells us the reasons for the Law.(1) While we all break the Law at some point or another, some keep the law more that others — and they get a ‘holier than thou’ type of attitude, like they’re better than everybody else around them.

This Scripture shows that we cannot get cocky or prideful & think we are in God’s good standing because we kept 10 more laws more perfectly than other folks. We are ALL in the same boat. We all have messed up & jacked up… and are in need of grace.

    (2) The Law shows us the righteous will of God and clearly defines to us what it is. It also shows us that we can NEVER keep the whole law because at some point or another we will fail.

What happens when people continuely fail at trying to keep something is that they just give up and say forget it. Even when we fail at keeping commands, we just ‘throw in the towel’ and say it’s not worth it & go back to doing worldly things.

But knowing that I even when I slip up in life, that I have grace on my side — gives me a vigor to keep doing what is right.

God even simplifies the commanedments and say that we have fullfilled them ALL by ‘Loving God, loving man as ourselves’ (we love ourselves because we were created in the image & likeness of God)
